Tip Calculator

Work out the tip on a bill, see the total, and split it between any number of people — with an option to round the total to a whole dollar.

Tip$18.00
Total$118.00
Per person$118.00
Tip per person$18.00
Effective tip rate18%

Tip is calculated on the bill amount you entered.

Formula and calculation

tip=bill×tip%100total=bill+tipper person=totalpeople\begin{gathered}\text{tip} = \dfrac{\text{bill} \times \text{tip\%}}{100}\\[6pt]\text{total} = \text{bill} + \text{tip}\\[6pt]\text{per person} = \dfrac{\text{total}}{\text{people}}\end{gathered}
Rounding is applied to the total (up or down to a whole dollar), and the tip is then reported as total − bill — so the numbers always add up.

Worked example

For an $85.50 bill with a 20% tip split between 2 people: the tip is 85.50 × 0.20 = $17.10, the total is $102.60, and each person pays $51.30.

Typical tip percentages

In the United States, 15% on the pre-tax bill is the traditional baseline for table service, 18–20% is now the common range for good service, and 20% or more is standard at many full-service restaurants in major cities. Delivery drivers typically get 10–15%, and bars $1–2 per drink. Outside the US, tipping customs vary widely — in much of Europe service is included, and 5–10% is a courtesy; in Japan tipping can be considered impolite.

What the results mean

Tip
The tip amount. With rounding on, this is adjusted so the total lands on a whole dollar — the effective tip rate row shows what that worked out to.
Total
The bill plus the tip — what actually gets paid, after any rounding.
Per person
The total divided by the number of people. With rounding off this is exact, so it can have fractions of a cent when it doesn't divide evenly.
Tip per person
The tip alone divided by the number of people.
Effective tip rate
The tip as a share of the bill after rounding. With no rounding it equals the percentage you chose.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the traditional approach — the IRS treats a mandatory service charge as taxable wages, not a tip. Tipping on the post-tax total is simpler and usually adds only a little.

How do I split a bill unevenly between people?

Enter the number of full shares as the party size to get a per-person amount, then adjust manually: a person with one drink extra can add the drink's price plus tip. The per-person tip row helps you see the tip share before any adjustments.

What is double tipping?

Beware of receipts that print a suggested tip calculated on the post-tax total including an automatic service charge. Check whether a gratuity was already added before adding more on top — this calculator does not detect automatic charges, so subtract them from the bill amount first.

How does rounding work here?

Rounding applies to the total you pay, not the tip you chose. Rounding up to the next whole dollar makes the effective tip slightly higher, and the calculator shows exactly what percentage that worked out to.
