Formula and calculation
Worked example
An invoice for 250 at Germany's standard 19%: the VAT is $47.50 and the total is $297.50, of which $250.00 is the price excluding VAT. Germany's 19% sits near the middle of the EU's standard rates, which run from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary.
VAT, GST and sales tax — what the difference is
VAT and GST are consumption taxes charged at every step of a supply chain, and the percentage on a receipt is the final one: usually between 10% and 27% on top of the net price. Each country's standard rate covers most goods, while essentials such as food, books and medicine often fall under reduced or zero rates. This is not US sales tax: the United States has no national VAT, and its state and local sales taxes work differently — for a US address, use the sales tax calculator instead.
What the results mean
- Price including VAT
- The price with VAT included — what the buyer pays. In remove mode this is the total you started from.
- Price excluding VAT
- The price before VAT. In add mode this is the amount you started from; in remove mode it is the answer.
- VAT / GST
- The VAT itself: in add mode the rate applied to the net price, in remove mode the total minus the net.
- VAT rate used
- The rate that was applied, and where it came from — a country's standard rate or your custom entry.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply by 1 + rate: a 100 net price at 20% becomes 100 × 1.20 = 120, of which 20 is VAT. The first mode does this for the 27 built-in country rates or any rate you type.
How do I remove VAT from a total?
Divide the total by 1 + rate: a 120 total at 20% is 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100. Subtracting 20% of 120 (which would give 96) is wrong — the tax was charged on the smaller net amount, not on the total.
Is VAT the same as US sales tax?
No. VAT is collected at each stage of production and is included in displayed retail prices in most countries; US sales tax is charged once, at the point of sale, and is usually added at the register. The US has no national VAT, so none of the rates in this table apply there.
Which VAT rate applies to what I am selling?
The standard rate shown here covers most goods and services, but many countries apply a reduced rate to food, books, medicine, transport and home energy, and some goods are zero-rated. Match your product to the official rate list — the standard rate is only the default.
Are these VAT rates current?
The table holds standard rates as reviewed in the second half of 2025 — Austria 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Hungary 27%, the UK 20%, Australia 10% GST and so on. Countries change rates from time to time, so for anything financial confirm the current rate with the country's tax authority.
